How We Cocooned without Cocooning…

Posted by on Aug 24, 2012 in At Home, Misc Thoughts, Lessons and Experiences | 4 comments

Like most adoptive parents, we attended adoption training seminars, and read many great books with well respected theories on how to prepare for and raise your adopted child. “Cocooning” is one of the most popular  methods for helping  your adopted child learn who mom and dad are, and become acclimated to their new world and family. In simple terms, cocooning is basically wiping your calendar clean and focusing on staying home/laying low with your adopted child. You don’t go to church, play dates, birthday parties, out to dinner, a friend’s house or even...

Oh the wait….

Oh my word! I had forgotten how hard this part of the process is. Praise God,  on Tuesday, June 12th we were successfully submitted to the US Embassy (where we are applying for Markon’s Entrance Visa to come home). Within a few hours we received an email stating that they were beginning the I604 (Orphan Status Investigation), where they review and confirm Markon’s “story” to make sure he is a true, legal orphan. This process can take a few days, a few weeks, or a few months. Usually families hear from the embassy within a few days, with either an approval of the...

Confessions of a Glutton…

Posted by on Jun 10, 2012 in Misc Thoughts, Lessons and Experiences | 0 comments

Nesting is in full effect here at the Shadrick home. Markon’s paperwork is being submitted to the US Embassy on Tuesday, and hopefully we are just a few weeks away from bringing him home! With this nesting, comes purging too…. And with this purging comes some self reflection, and honestly, sadness. Gluttony (as take from W*k*ped*a): over-indulgence and over-consumption of food, drink, or wealth items to the point of extravagance or waste. In some Christian denominations, although not stated in the Bible, it is considered one of the seven deadly sins—a misplaced...

What I learned this time…

Posted by on May 4, 2012 in Misc Thoughts, Lessons and Experiences | 4 comments

In the last 18 mo I have spent over 5 weeks in Ethiopia. I really thought that having spent this time there would have given me a pretty good idea of life in Ethiopia. I was wrong. Yes, I saw immense poverty, like I expected. Yes, I met selfless servants who have given up everything to serve the world’s forgotten people. Yes, I saw hope through ministries and people who will never cease to amaze me. But what struck me most, was how clueless I am to the true reality of most Ethiopians. Although I didn’t mean to, I was living with my head in the sand. While I have heard it said...

Where Our Treasure Lies

Posted by on Mar 26, 2012 in Finances, Spiritual Battle and Growing Faith | 3 comments

I have been bouncing around this post in my head for a while. Praying for clarity as to whether or not I should really blog about it. I don’t want to offend anyone. I don’t want people to feel uncomfortable. I don’t want people to get mad at me. And really, I don’t want people to think we just want their money, because we don’t. God is providing for this adoption in amazing ways, and I feel no need to beg, plead or remind our family and friends that we are trying to raise the funds to bring M home. But finally this morning, after absorbing and reflecting on the...
